Saturday Morning News Digest

I've never been an Obama critic. Irresponsible though my apathy to domestic politics may be, I've already decided it's not for me.

With that in mind, I'd love to get some commentary going on Obama's support of the construction for a Mosque blocks from the Ground Zero site.

In other news, I hope that one positive result of the drought in Russia will be that Americans vary their grain intake!

And finally, an LA Times article got me wondering.

Apparently, French women are now opting to cover up on the beach. They girls interviewed said they still go topless in private, because strap marks are ugly (agree!); but as most women no longer bare it all, they prefer not to cause a spectacle.

I agree with that as well, but it begs the question as to who the first women were to cover up and why...

  1. My problem with Obama supporting the mosque is not so much about his support, but about the fact that he has a public opinion on the plans for use of a building that is just near ground zero. I get that it's news now, but saying publicly that that you support it only justifies the idea that there is a reason for people to object. I would have preferred him to not comment and make it a non issue rather than feeding the media frenzy.

Also it saddens me that French women are covering up, I never got the chance to make it out to the riviera, and now what's the point?

  2. If I am not wrong, the plan for the mosque is years away.
This is Obama's 2nd year as president. May be the debate will continue for another year after which the both the parties will work towards getting elected at which point things will be different.(Not sure how it works... Spare my ignorance here.)
Now Obama supporting the mosque could appease some Islamic groups if not all.
That could help his administration mitigate some risk...(btw. According to google, there are about 5 million Islam followers in North America).
Just the way old problems are put on back burner as the new problems arise this issue will slide off the priority list.
No president wants a Sept 11 during his tenure.

    AND/OR

Could this be like treating the kids at chuck-e-cheese and then going about doing your work so that kids don't complain.

With the president supporting the mosque, hundreds of thousands have come out in protests. I believe even the opposing party stood against him. The Sept 11 memories came alive (Not that it was forgotten). Was the done to fuel the public sentiments about Sept 11?
Will this benefit Obama administration in justifying the duration of troops in middle east.

(There are too many parameters and I am bad at debates. Again as I always say, spare me and delete the comment if it does not make sense.)
